At its top and standing some fifty five metres proud of the River Tyne this is surely one of the most recognisable river crossings in England. When built, it was the largest single span bridge in the country and still stands proud as a functioning monument to the shipbuilders who put it together between 1925 and 1928. Over three quarters of a million rivets were used during construction and hold together some seven thousand tons of steel and amazingly, river traffic flowed up and down the Tyne throughout its whole construction. Now that’s proper civil engineering!
Shown here, a beautiful balance of form versus function shine through once peripheral elements are stripped back, creating a vista that has changed little in the last hundred years.
