Known as the capital of the Cotswolds, Cirencester is a picture postcard market town which, in Roman times, was second only to Londinium. A church has stood on this site since the Saxons were here with the tower added in the 1400s. Here it almost seems like we find ourselves in rural France where small winding lanes suddenly open out onto a central public space for trading and meeting – a reminder that many layouts in English towns are the legacy of French rule.
Curating the colour palette and gently crafting shadows means that the viewer is encouraged right into the heart of the picture and then back out again to explore the foreground. The fact that the tower is not shown entirety also encourages the inquisitive wanderer to round the corner and discover more.
