Chester Storyhouse formerly ODEON Chester – this is where memories are made. Coming out of here as an eight year old after watching the movie Convoy – convinced my destiny lay as an interstate trucker in the States was just the start! So many other films watched here shaped my love of cinema – from the Saturday Morning Club to Reservoir Dogs and from the Jungle Book to Goodfellas. Such radical and amazing changes have taken place since it closed it’s doors as the ODEON, and now it’s enjoying a whole new chapter as Storyhouse, bringing cinema, theatre, music, literature and food to the city in a way no Cestrian (that’s what Chester folk are called) could have ever imagined. It warms my heart when the repurposing of structures for the arts takes precedence over demolition and greed. These kind of places breathe new life into old bricks and long may they continue. Once any moveable elements are omitted from view the true structure reveals itself – like Chester’s answer to the Tate Modern (and could have been designed by Giles Gilbert Scott too!) it really is a beauty – a true city icon.
